The Phenak-ist-o-scope kit allows you to assemble the device and paint it as well as create the animated media to add to the spinning device.

Also known as a wheel of life and sold as the ‘fantascope’, the device allows drawn sequential
images to be perceived as movement. At the edge of a second disc there are a number of
radial slits that create the perception of movement while being rotated on a hand-held

Behind the panel a clockwork mechanism causes a paper disc, painted with bright

A flip book or flick book is a book with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page
to the next, so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate..
Flip books are essentially a primitive form of animation. Like motion pictures, they rely on
persistence of vision to create the illusion that continuous motion is being seen.

Openings in each page allow the viewer to see through the entire book to the back,
and images on each page work together to create a dimensional scene inside.
This type of book was inspired by theatrical stage sets.
